The 5 Best Cafes In Siargao

Hopping between tropical island paradises and catching those early morning waves can be hard work. So it’s important to know where the best cafes in Siargao are to eat breakfast when you need to refuel. These all-day breakfast spots are laid back, relaxed and chilled – just like the entire island. In Siargao, there’s no need to rush and you can take your time in savouring your food and drink. And another good thing? Most of the time, shoes are optional.

THE BEST PLACES FOR BREAKFAST AND COFFEE IN SIARGAO

1. Shaka Cafe

If you’re looking for a breakfast for the ‘gram, this is the spot to visit. But make sure to get there early for a table or a beanbag on the beach. Shaka has become popular for its colourful, intricate smoothie bowls and fresh cold press juices. It’s likely to be the spot that locals recommend to holiday-goers when you ask “where to eat in Siargao?”.

An outdoor cafe, Shaka Cafe in Siargao has whitewashed bench tables out on the open grass, high benches with stools next to black and white surfing photographs and a couple of beanbags down on the sand underneath swaying palm trees. We selected the Bom Dia and Cloud 9 Kook smoothie bowls and sat under the shade of the palm trees to enjoy our breakfast (bring your beach towel with you in case all the seats are full when you visit!).

The cafe offers super extras including bee pollen, spirulina and cacao nibs to ensure that you’re staying in peak beach body shape. Shaka Cafe Siargao is one of four branches in the Philippines; the others are in Bohol. El Nido and Cebu. The Siargao cafe is found behind Reef 9 Resort off Tourism Road, otherwise it is also accessible from Cloud 9 beach (a short stroll from the boardwalk).

2. Fili Beans Espresso

The expert baristas on Siargao work at Fili Beans Espresso. Housed within the tranquil grounds of Harana Surf Resort, the small kiosk serves up well-made espresso blends and iced coffee drinks alongside a variety of healthy snack options. In all our haste to escape the blistering Filipino heat, we forgot to ask the origin of the coffee beans but we do recall a smooth caramel flavour from our latte and single espresso.

The coffee stand has a few bar seats under which you may find the resident dog who will likely be napping. Should the bar seats be occupied, the staff welcome you to sit within the resort’s restaurant on cushions under beautifully woven cylindrical and spherical lamp shades. If you’re also wanting to eat, non-resort guests are welcome to dine-in the restaurant. Espresso martinis are served after 7pm.

3. Cafe Loka

This beachfront cafe was our first stop during our coffee exploring of Siargao Island. Positioned behind a grove of palm trees, Cafe Loka is only a few surfboards away from the famed Cloud 9 surfing spot. The cafe opens from 7am and is an ideal spot to refuel after a morning surf. We were the first customers one morning following Bevan’s surfing lesson (he says he managed to stand up for a solid six seconds…).

Cafe Loka offers all-day breakfast, toasted sandwiches and salads. Coffee-wise, don’t expect anything amazing. The coffee beans are locally sourced but brewed on a machine designed for the home rather than commercial use. The cafe also uses long life milk. Whilst we wouldn’t return for a cup of coffee (we did drink flat whites here), the location is ideal for sitting in a hammock or cushion on the beach with a wonderful vantage point of Cloud 9 boardwalk.

4. Bake X Siargao

For “Westerners” visiting Bake X, the decor of this little eatery is likely to remind you of a high-street cafe you’d find back at home. Freshly painted white walls, polished timber tables and air conditioning greet you when you step inside. It was an afternoon coffee pit-stop for us so there was no bustling breakfast crowd to fight for a seat on the lounge. If you swing by for breakfast, the menu features all-day breakfast items as well as traditional Filipino breakfast choices, which we hadn’t seen on many other menus.

Do take heed as the prices quoted are quite higher than other eateries in the area. Whilst we didn’t taste any of the food items, Bevan enjoyed a refreshing iced latte, served with a bamboo straw – a tick of approval from us for this environmentally conscious step.

Opening Hours
  • Monday 7:00am – 5:00pm

5. The Pleasure Point Cafe

UPDATE JUNE 2020 | permanently closed

One of our favourite things about travelling is finding fabulous places to eat off the main tourist road and down dusty, dirt tracks. And it’s on one of these dusty, dirt tracks that you’ll find The Pleasure Point Cafe. Opened in 2014, the breakfast and brunch cafe serves all-day sweet and savoury breakfast items. Laying claim to the “surfer’s best coffee spot on the island”, Pleasure Point Cafe only uses coffee beans grown and roasted in the Philippines, generously serving its espresso drinks as double shots.

Rotating fans ensure that you remain cool whilst seated on a stool at one of the high wooden tables. Between the two of us, we shared the veggie crepes (tip: try camote tops, which is a type of filipino spinach), chia & coconut pudding with fruit and the mango & caramel mini pancakes. Keep an eye out for the cats who are persistent in trying to have a nibble of your food! A specials board with 50 PHP ice-cream will also grab your attention. Wifi is available but there are no split bills.
