Berlin Specialty Coffee Guide | 5 Outstanding Cafes To Visit

After cycling through the Tiergarten, walking under Brandenburg gate or an all night party in one of the city’s famous clubs, you’re going to need a caffeine fix. Luckily for us (and you), there are several great places to enjoy third wave coffee in Berlin. Here are some of our favourite places to make it into our Berlin specialty coffee guide. Take take thirty minutes and grab that coffee pick me up.

Companion Coffee

This speciality coffee shop runs in partnership with Voo Store in Kreuzberg, Berlin. When I first moved to Berlin, I visited Companion upon discovering that the manager is Australian. Thus, I knew I’d be in safe hands when I chose to buy coffee here. Loyalties aside, the team at Companion Coffee are ambassadors for the speciality coffee movement, dedicated to working with coffee and tea suppliers throughout Europe and across the globe.

TIP: If you’re travelling with a friend who enjoys tea, don’t fret as an extensive tea selection is available.

Concierge Coffee

This hidden little gem of a cafe, only 15m², is located in a former concierge’s hut, hence the name. If you have more time to enjoy your coffee, choose to sit inside at one of the few tables available to customers. Here, you can watch locals come by as they escape for a few moments from their busy start-ups. Coffee isn’t the only thing that Concierge takes seriously. When I visit, my barista is sporting quite a fine moustache. Not just good taste in coffee, but style and flair in all aspects of appearances.

Bonanza Coffee Roasters

Bonanza is a must if you are anywhere near Mauerpark. This spot is no hidden secret but the coffee is definitely worth the wait as they arguably brew some of the best coffee in Berlin. Visit on a Sunday morning to grab a cup before crossing the road to the flea markets in Mauerpark. Bonanza has a sister cafe Bonanza Coffee Heroes that you can also check out.

DoubleEye

When I lived in Berlin, I spent many mornings trying to perfect my coffee order in German at DoubleEye. (For the record, it’s “einem starken Cafe Latte bitte”). You’ll spot the cafe when you see the crowd of people drinking their coffee on the street in the quieter neighbourhood of Schöneberg. It’s likely you’ll have to queue (and keep both eyes out for a seat) but the well-organised crowd are mostly regulars. Inside the cafe, it’s standing room only. As one of Berlin’s oldest, high-quality espresso bars, Double Eye remains a “pit-stop” for locals who enjoy their single espresso before taking to the streets again.
