Specialty Coffee Vienna: 5 Coffeehouses You Need To Know

A trip to Vienna would not be complete without stepping inside a Viennese coffeehouse. Coffeehouses decorate each district, spotted with marble-top tables and accompanied by delectable pastry creations or a slice of torte.

Yet, the better value in your cup can be found in the newer third wave coffee shops in Vienna. The newer breed tends to serve single-origin coffee and arguably the best specialty coffee in Vienna. Many coffee roasters are offering a cup that is often priced on par or less than its older predecessors (e.g. blends) for a higher-quality brew.

If you’re searching for the best coffee places in Vienna, be sure to check out a few of the below recommendations.

Coffee Pirates

Coffee Pirates is one of the bigger cafes in Vienna’s third wave coffee scene but you’ll be lucky to find a seat at any time of the day. The cafe’s large seating area offers table and lounge setting for groups.

A bar runs along the windows where one can perch idly and watch the passers-by. Offering two single-origin coffees on the menu which change seasonally, the options were from Rwanda and Kenya during my visit.

You’ll also receive a postcard containing information of your coffee bean selection which provides details of its origins and tasting notes.

Kaffeemodul

Don’t write off one of the smaller guys. Despite the cafe being the smallest coffeeshop in Vienna, Kaffeemodul’s coffee packs a punch. If ordering your coffee “fur heir”, you’ll find bench seating for three people inside and a further four seats that fold down on the adjacent wall.

The filter coffee tools hang on the wall behind the barista, making efficient use of the space inside the tiny cafe. Of the filtered coffee options available, you can choose from V60, AeroPress and Kalita.

Monkey bread and breakfast cookies are also on hand if you’re feeling peckish or to kick start your morning.

Jonas Reindl

Jonas Reindl takes its name from the intersection at which it is located. Reindl, a Viennese casserole dish, is the name of the tram stop across from the cafe and Jonas was the first name of the man who built said tram stop. Located close to Universität Wien, this busy coffee shop boasts a stunning interior.

You’ll find recycled chairs rumoured to be over 100 years old and a mirror that runs along an entire side wall. Professionals mix with students inside, all whilst enjoying a fine cup of coffee.

I’d recommend choosing one of their filters. Choose between the house blend or a blend from a guest roaster. Each month, the cafe features a guest roaster from a list of the “who’s who” of Europe’s specialty coffee scene. This central location is also a great spot for lunch.

POC Cafe “People on Caffeine”

The name of this cafe somewhat draws up an image in your mind of patrons hooked up on drips with caffeine running through their veins. Quite morbid really and no, this was of course not the case when I arrived at POC Cafe.

This was one of my favourite cafes in Vienna for its relaxed atmosphere and chilled vibe. Lounge on the squishy couch or perch at one of the wooden tables as you enjoy your caffeine dose from the cafe’s filtered coffee selection.

Kaffeefabrik

A small cosy cafe with seating for only eight people inside. If you manage to nab a seat, sip your latte and watch the locals coming and going.

The cafe is not your typical “downtown, hustle and bustle cafe”. Its calm ambiance allows you the time to have a chat to the barista who will help you discover coffee flavours based on taste preferences.

The cafe roasts a wide variety of coffee beans in its coffee factory, imported via a large network of producers from countries including Brazil, Nicaragua and Indonesia. Kaffeefabrik is the place to pick up a freshly roasted bag of beans to take on your travels.
